THE WINTER'S WATCHER

Why is it, O wolf of winter,
That you cry so eager tonight?
Do you hide, my blackest sinner,
From the crimes you have done outright?

Blood mars your fur and once white teeth;
Hope not for some mercy, but rain.
Deserve you not even to breathe
Tiny whispers; you must abstain!

Now he comes; the winter’s watcher
Shan’t be fooled by wolfish nature.
He knows you made deathly offers
To the younger bucks, I wager.

Run! He seeks your glassy eyes now;
Above, he waits for your demise!
Wolf, will you make so fatal a vow
To halt, beneath starry white skies?

Too late! You have pondered too long!
Collapse, great beast; your end is nigh.
Fear not; your death shan’t be prolonged.
Such sweet rest you’ll never defy.

Darkest raven, done is your deed.
Rest now, dear death’s tired lover;
Awake at dawn, such is your creed.
You must find flesh of another.
