Corel Painter 4 Essentials // Photoshop CS4 Extended

(had one for the grass but I don't have the link saved on my Notepad)
Time: 12+ hours
Comments: Hosted a few join.me sessions while painting this. I did use a few brushes for this from a speedpaint pack, particularly the clouds, but otherwise the rest was painted by me. I may upload WIP shots of this later on.

Do you have any tips for fur?

I've been working on a fur tutorial but I'm kind of lazy, and to be honest, I change fur style to adapt to however I feel like coloring. It's somewhat of a complicated process for me. In my opinion, it's important for your underpainting to be clear and "fur-friendly," if you will. I am an artist that usually avoids lineart and will paint over lines, but before I do that, certain features, i.e., the noise, mouth, and eyes, I will go over in black or whatever color they need to be, and smudge the edges so that they are smoother and blend more nicely. I'll use darker colors around said areas for the fur if needed if the black is too strong (mostly around the eyes) and occasionally lighter colors for the fur around the muzzle. But yes, back to the underpainting... be sure you make it clear the direction of where your fur is going. In this stage, I generally avoid fur details and just focus on colors and their direction. Use multiple colors, and it helps to pick colors from around your environment, too. If you have an unclear underpainting, it is more difficult to paint the final details of fur, and I've found that when I'm sloppy or careless with my underpainting, I usually have to re-do the coloring. If you get it right the first time, you're halfway there.

As far as details go/for the final steps, I use a lot of layers. I like painting over things, and while it may make the layer panel "cluttered," it is just a lot easier for me. The fur itself is multiple steps. It's not just one layer of light fur and one layer of dark fur. There's certain areas of fur you need to highlight, depending on where your source of light is, and certain areas that need to be dark, depending upon where your shadows are. Even so, there's always color variations in those,  too. Your "light fur" could have strokes of slightly darker fur, and your shadow areas could have strokes of slightly lighter fur, and then some. Never use the same color for everything. If you want to pick up the fur somewhere and the color is slightly off, don't stress about it.

I love this - a good shot but I think it's the detail that really makes it.

The clouds, the grass and the fur all look wonderful in their own right and (strange thing to pick) but I particularly like the tongue/jaw

I have to work on it at that time, if I do layers. Unless I buy the upgraded version, it merges all layers. :3 So, I have to start and finish on that day.

I especially admire how the dark colors of the sky contrast with said grass. c:
